J. Steven Svoboda is an attorney with the Carmen Patti Law Group, LLC with an emphasis in patent prosecution and consulting in pursuing protection of one’s intellectual property. He has twenty years of experience as an attorney and seven years as an intellectual property attorney, which have included preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a wide variety of electronic, software, and mechanical arts; infringement and validity studies; licensing; and trademark practice. Mr. Svoboda develops strategies for building intellectual property portfolios based on a client’s business plan, technology, and positioning of its business relative to its competitors. His technical areas of expertise include computer systems and networks, software and application program interfaces, computer graphics, integrated circuits and processes, peripheral and memory devices and systems, optical technologies, instrumentation and medical devices, mapping, and biotechnology.

Mr. Svoboda has practiced with Carr and Ferrell in Palo Alto, California and Schox PLC in San Francisco, California.

Mr. Svoboda received his J.D. degree with honors from Harvard Law School in 1991, a Master’s Degree in Physics from the University of California at Berkeley, and a B.S. in Physics and English from the University of California at Los Angeles with highest honors and the distinction of being chosen as one of the two top students in each of his majors. He is licensed to practice in the State of California, the United States Supreme Court and the First Circuit Court of Appeals, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Svoboda has participated as co-lead attorney in state and federal litigation including a federal civil rights case in the Southern District of New York. Mr. Svoboda is a tournament-level chess player and is nationally ranked as an Expert (the rank below Master). Mr. Svoboda speaks and writes fluently in Spanish. He founded an international human rights organization on behalf of which he consulted with the United Nations in Geneva in 2001 and for which he received a Human Rights Award in 2002.
